One Planet Polar Summit: the first international summit dedicated to glaciers and the poles
The One Planet Polar Summit will be held at the National Museum of Natural History from 8 to 10 November 2023, at a time when the poles appear to be central to climate regulation and the preservation of biodiversity.
This Polar Summit follows the first National Polar Strategy adopted by France in 2022 and succeeds the One Ocean Summit in June 2022 and the One Forest Summit in March 2023.
The context
The Arctic and Antarctica are now major strategic areas on which the planet's balance largely depends. Like the oceans to which they are intrinsically linked, the two North and South Poles indeed play a central role in the regulation of the climate and the preservation of biodiversity. Actors and the first victims of climate change, they are also sounding the alarm.
The state of the glacial worlds and the highlands is no less worrying; they say how the collapse of the cryosphere on a global scale can have effects on populations, all ecosystems, water resources, sea level rise...
If the phenomenon of the collapse of the cryosphere is irreversible, the consideration of the subject by the world's leaders must be in line with the challenges and disasters whose premises are already visible in order to allow ecosystems and populations to adapt. The effects of climate change, warming the Arctic and Antarctica very strongly and causing the melting of the Greenland ice sheet and sea ice such as that of the Antarctic glaciers or other emblematic ones, such as the Himalayas and Kilimanjaro, justify an exceptional and concerted mobilization of the international community.
The program
A scientific forum bringing together the international scientific community in the presence of experts from the Museum will take place on 8 and 9 November. Then, a political segment with leaders and figures from the glacial and polar worlds, which will be joined by the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron, will be held on November 10.
